Another Crib Recall - Dorel Asia brand Sold at Walmart and Kmart

Dorel Asia is recalling 20 models of cribs sold at Kmart and Walmart since January, 2005.  This is a serious recall, with 10 infants injured and one killed due to a malfunction of the hardware.

The CSPC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) is advising anyone with these cribs to stop using them immediately until the repair kit can be installed.  They are also advising owners to order the repair kit even if the crib is not currently being used because the malfunction can happen even during re-assembly. View the press release here.

Repair kits can be ordered here or by calling (866) 762-2304 between 8am and 4:30pm EST (7am - 3:30pm CST) Monday through Friday.

How Much Should My Little One Be Eating?

This post is part confession and part (hopefully helpful) information.

Part of my quest to save money has lead me to menu planning - a concept completely foreign to me having grown up on frozen dinners, fast food and chili dogs (my mom's "specialty").  To be honest, I often feel like I don't know what I'm supposed to be eating, how much I'm supposed to be eating and don't get me started on how confused I am on what and how much to feed my toddler!

Before it was time to transition my baby to table foods, I dabbled in meal planning, which usually meant I'd flip through a cookbook and pick out a couple recipes I thought looked good, buy the stuff to make it and occasionally I'd actually get around to cooking it when I remembered where the heck that recipe was.

When it came time to get my little one off baby food, I knew I needed to make wiser choices when it came to what our family ate, but I felt more lost than ever. On top of all this, the economy combined with the expenses of a child re-prioritized my efforts at couponing, meal planning and saving money in general.  I've been much more organized and deliberate with my meal planning since late summer, but still feel very confused when it comes to balance and portion.

Today, I discovered a resource on the USDA's food guide pyramid website which allows you to build a food guide pyramid for your toddler.  It's not completely customized because you can only specify your child's age, gender and activity level, but it's a start.  I knew what the food guide pyramid was but this breaks it down into real life application.

Here are the things I'm finding most helpful.  I don't know much about portion sizes for myself let alone someone a third my size.  I used the toddler option and found the pyramid tells you, based on the information you enter how much of each category should be consumed in a day, ie: 3oz grains, 1 cup fruits, etc.  The pyramid page includes a link to two sample "meal and snack patterns" which explain how to break the totals from the pyramid page into portions for meals and snacks.  Each of the two "patterns" then link to sample meal plans based on the pattern.

If you're concerned about portion sizes for your toddler, or if you're lost like I was, I recommend visiting mypyramid.gov to get started.  When you get to the page, scroll down and look for the "Specific Audiences" section in the blue toolbar on the left.  You can then select whether you want to build a pyramid for yourself, your toddler, your older child, or one if you're pregnant/breastfeeding.

My next confession... Will I be packing babyfood for pre-school... to come.

Free Beech Nut Let's Grow Bowls at Schnucks - Unadvertised

I had to make a lunch run to Schnucks and saw an unadvertised deal on Beech Nut Lets Grow Bowls - a  $10/10 sale!  If you're one of the unlucky folks like me who discovered these were not $1 at the local Walmart, here's your chance to get them free.

I usually don't get my weekly ad until I get home Monday night, but I had skimmed the online ad prior to my trip and didn't see these advertised. While there, I noticed the Gerber 2nd Foods Twin Packs sale was carried over from last week.  They're still $0.95/each, which also was not in the ad.

Save on Milk at QT

In my area, Prarie Farms milk is about $1/gallon cheaper at QT gas stations than the grocery stores and Walmart.  They also take coupons, so I was able to use the internet printable for my free 1/2 gallon.

I saved $2 plus got a free 1/2 gallon of chocolate.

Finally something at the gas station that's cheaper by the gallon!!! LOL

14oz Dawn 50cents at Family Dollar

While looking at Family Dollar's deals on diapers, I happened to notice Dawn dish soap is on sale for $0.75.  Use the $0.25/1 coupon in the 12/27 PG insert to get it for $0.50.

Yes, Family Dollar accepts manufacturer coupons but I've only used coupons out of the newspaper.  I've never tried internet printables.

Family Dollar Deals

Family Dollar has several baby items in their ad found in the SmartSource insert this week.

Their price on Huggies isn't stellar ($9 before coupons), but their price on the 144ct Huggies Wipes refill isn't bad at $5.  (Use the $0.50/1 coupon in Sunday's Smartsource insert to make them $4.50.)

Luvs diapers are $7 and Luvs wipes are $4.

Crib Recall

Do you have this crib?

Caramela Furnitures' "Diane" Crib

If so, stop using it.  Visit this CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) Press Release to learn more about a potential entrapment hazard caused when slats come loose, which has prompted the recall of about 1,000 cribs.

The release advises parents to stop using the crib until a replacement drop side can be provided but that won't be available until March.  If you decide to move your kids out of the crib permanantly, please go ahead and get the replacement in case you need it for future kids or if you hand it down.
