Time to Get Ready for Fall Gardening

It's WAY too hot right now for things, like lettuce, spinach, broccoli, radishes and carrot to grow, but in about a month it will be time to start getting seeds in the ground. So, start thinking about what you will plant, where you'll plant it, and do any garden or soil maintenance it will need.  Starting that work now will means you can break the work into smaller chores on these hot days.

If you want to speed up the process, you can start seeds indoors now, so that they're ready to transplant when the weather cools down.  Carrots and radishes need to be started in the ground, but lettuce, broccoli and spinach can be started indoors. Now is also a great time to start an herb container, so its mature when it's time to bring indoors.  This will give you fresh herbs well into winter, if not all the way through.

If you need garden tools, trays, containers, soil or seeds think about posting a want on Freecycle.

Gardening, when it's successful, is a great way to save money on herbs and veggies.
