Freecycling

One man's junk really is another man's treasure.

Freecycle.org is a fabulous website for both getting rid of perfectly useful (and even useless) things you have taking up space in your home and then filling that freed up space with the things you find that someone else no longer has use for. The ultimate goal for is to keep materials out of landfills and occasionally to keep pets out of shelters.

Each "group," which is broken down by geographic area, is run a little differently based on the preferences of the moderator, but here is a brief Freecycle 101.

You'll see two types of listings, Offer or Wanted. Pretty self explanatory.

Usually moderators want Offers to be listed like this - Offer: Box of Romance Novels 63126. Start with Offer give a brief description and end with the zip. This is so people can instantly decide if they wan to read more and if it is close enough for them to travel to pick up. More details should be given in the body of the message. People interested can respond to the message and the person offering will receive their response as an email. Sometimes, Offer-ers will give the item to the first person to respond. Other times, they will state in the message that it goes to the person who can be there soonest "earliest pickup."

Wanted messages should start with Wanted and give a description. A zip code isn't necessary, but in the message give an idea of how far you would travel to pick something up. Don't include a sob story.  Just say what you need.  Some people actually skip posts with sob stories, so while you might think you're making a great appeal, you might be costing yourself something you could have used.

Other messages you might see are PPU: lawn mower 62128 - meaning the lawn mower in 62128 has already been spoken for, but hasn't been picked up yet. ReOffer: lawn mower 62128 means the lawn mower wasn't picked up at the agreed upon time so it's up for grabs again.

Freecycle Safety
Use common sense when arranging for someone to pick up something you've offered or when you go pick something up.  Do pickups during the day. Make sure someone knows where you are going and when.  Don't take kids with you.  They're better off safe at home or school if God forbid something happens to you.  Take another adult with you.  Safety in numbers isn't just for kids.  Only pick up from outside locations.  Don't go into a strange home or building.  Don't go into neighborhoods you don't know or neighborhoods you consider dangerous.  Trust your instincts.  If you're gut tells you it's a bad idea... it is!  Your gut is telling you what your brain should know.  When someone is picking up, get their full name, phone number and address.  Consider doing a reverse search of their phone number at anywho.com.  If the phone is a landline, this will tell you who the phone number belongs to, in other words, if they are who they say they are.  Unfortunately, this won't work on cell phones.  If someone picking up doesn't want to give their address, tell them it a no deal.  There's something suspicious about someone who wants your address but won't share theirs. Remember, ultimately you're responsible for your own safety.

Beech Nut/Pampers Deal

If you're taking advantage of any of the deals on Pampers this week, be sure to clip the 5 Free 4oz Jars of Beech Nut baby food coupon in the 12/6 SS.

I have seen the 4oz jars at Schnucks, Deirbergs and Shop N Save. I have seen other Beech Nut products at other stores, but not the 4oz jars that qualify under the coupon.

If your little one no longer eats baby food, consider taking advantage of the deal and donating the jars of baby food.

Walgreen's January Coupon Book

Below are the coupon's you might be interested in for your infant or toddler. You'll find these coupon books in the rack near the door with the weekly ads. You really only need one book because you can leave the coupon you want in the book and have the cashier scan it, which allows you to keep it to use later. However, I usually pick up an extra one in case I run into a cashier who insists on having the coupon. I'll keep my eyes open for coupon matchups and post them when I find them.

$5/1 Spectrum DHA Toddler Liquid 1.8 oz
$1/1 PediaSure 6 ct 8 oz each
$2/1 Humphreys Teething Strips 18 pack or Tablets 135 ct
$1/1 Little Tikes Baby Accessories
$1/1 Hyland’s Teething Tablets 125 ct

For a full list of coupons in the book, visit the post by VioletFringe at AFullCup.com.

Two Great Target Daily Deals Today

Target Daily Deals are only good until they're sold out or midnight, whichever comes first. Items very every day and it's rare to have 1 item for kids, today they have two:

Elmo Live for $39.99 (reg $59.99)

A Very Peanuts (Charlie Brown/Snoopy) Christmas pillow book $12.99 (reg 29.99)

Not a lot of deals

Everyone is so focused on the holidays that there haven't been many good deals on diapers, baby food and the like. When I see them I'll be sure to pass them on.

Be careful right now about snatching up a lot of something in an ad just because it's on sale. The sales lately haven't been much of a deal compared to what I've seen in the last few months. I'm only buying what I need and hoping for deals in January.

If anyone has much experience on how or if deals on baby stuff pick up after the holidays, please post a comment?

Diaper Samples Week of Nov 9

More opportunities to get free diaper samples this week.

Costco's Kirkland Diapers Sample is still available. Learn more here.
You do not need to be a Costco member to request the sample.

Walmart is offering a sample of Pamper's Extra Protection (Nighttime) Diapers here in sizes 4 or 5, and Huggies Little Movers here in sizes 3, 4, 5.

Huggies is offering a sample of their Pure and Natural Diapers here in sizes Newborn or 1.

I usually order diaper samples a size larger than what I need for two reasons:
1. Samples often take several weeks to deliver, so I know my child will be able to use the sample at some point, even if it is too big now.
2. I can use the sample to test the fit and determine if my child might be ready for a larger size diaper.

Coupons.com has reset

The print limits for Huggies and the dairy coupons on coupons.com have reset. So go back and print more!

You'll also find coupons for:

Pricing Diapers

To find the best value on diapers, you really need to compare unit costs instead of package cost. To do this, you'll need to develop a sort of price book but instead of the price, list the size, package name (ie: mega pack, value box, etc) and how many diapers are included. Each store has a different name for their packages and most have a different quantity than a similar package at another store. Use this information to calculate the unit cost when diapers are on sale and find the best value. My diaper book is a work in progress, but once I have the information I'll post it.

Changing My Name

For about a week, I've been contemplating my goals for this blog. It was started because I was constantly telling friends about great deals I'd read on other blogs and they suggested I collect the information on a webpage.

I decided to give it a go, and realized that I'm just not able to dedicate the time to all the coupon match-ups and other grocery deals that make sites like STLMommy or couponstl.blogspot.com so invaluable to me.

As a result, I've decided to fine tune my focus and therefore change my name to Megan's Baby Madness. My child is still in diapers and eating baby food, so I'm regularly seeking out deals on diapers, baby food, baby toiletries, toys and other needs for the under 5 set. Those deals are the ones I'm going to be bringing to you.

Instead of breaking down deals by store, I'm going to break them down by category for quick comparison. I'll have sections dedicated to diaper deals, formula deals and so on.

I've already looked at diaper deals for this week and will get that information posted as soon as possible. In the meantime, please be patient while I adjust the format of my blog to reflect this new direction. My blogspot address will not change immediately. I'll give everyone adequate notice before it happens.

Johnny's Market $5 off $25

If you get the Mail Call newspaper, check page 3 for a $5 off $25 coupon valid Monday Oct. 19 through Thursday, Oct. 22.

Call newspapers also publish other "Call" papers in the area, so if you get one, be sure to check for the same coupon.

Toy Rollbacks

There are some good rollbacks on toys at Walmart.com and with $0.97 shipping on many toys, it's probably cheaper to skip the trip to the store and order online with delivery. If you can't force yourself to pay $0.97 shipping select site to store.

A few points to remember when ordering online:
*Prices vary from Walmart.com to the store
*Walmart stores WILL NOT price match Walmart.com
*You cannot pay at the store for a Site-to-Store pickup. This means you can't order at the lower price online and use one of the coupons circulating right now when you pick up. But check with your store, some might work with you to do an adjustment after the fact at the customer service desk.

View the rollbacks here.

New Bzz Campaign - Glade Scents and Spray

I was so excited to receive my Bzz Kit in the mail last night for Glade Scents and Spray. I didn't get a chance to open it until this morning, but already I'm in love.

My 5 favorite things so far:

1. It works
2. Its simple to open the packaging and to put together
3. The smell is fantastic
4. Not a lot of motion required and seems to have a sufficiently wide "sensory" area
5. It has a nail hole in the back so you can hang it if you don't have a shelf

The only thing I don't like:

* it's not really decorative so it's tough to find a discrete place to put it that won't block the sensor. Thankfully, there is a nail hole (see number 5 above) to work around that.

***If you're interested in trying one. Post a comment and I'll send you a coupon for $4 off a starter kit.*** I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good sale. Suggested retail is $8.99. So a good sale, plus this coupon and you could get one free or for only a few dollars.

Read on to find out more about the product and my experience...

Glade is really stepping it up with their home fragrances line and this is even more proof. Their soy candles have been slowly edging out the pricey Yankee Candles in my home. I've been stuck on Yankee for years because I didn't feel like more affordable brands were effective.

So, why am I already in love with Scents and Spray? I put the thing together this morning in about 2 seconds. It was in a box so I didn't have to fight with one of those stupid sealed plastic things that I can never cut open or end up with a killer hand cramp and dull pair of scissors once I do. I opened the front of the Scents and Spray and batteries were already in it. Woo Hoo! I just pulled out the tab to activate the batteries, popped in the scent can and closed the front. A few seconds later it puffed. I tested it by pushing the button and another puff.

About 10 minutes later I waved my hand in front of it and nothing. I thought, why isn't the motion sensor working? It's trash day so the box had already be taken to the curb along with the instructions. So, I pulled out my Bzz Kit which explained when the light is on, it's in "lockout mode." This is the mode that keeps it from spraying every time there is movement.

When I realized it was working correctly, I hunted for a good place to put it. I finally settled on the baby's room. We don't keep the diaper pail in the house so I'm not battling diaper odors except when changing her. However, our dog has never taken kindly to having been replaced as the baby, so he has pee'ed on a few of her things in the room. We neutralized that smell with vinegar, so now it smells like a pickle! Hopefully when I get home it smells like flowers!

Just before leaving for work I had to run back to this room to grab something. I was concerned that I'd placed the Scents and Spray up too high - on top a bureau taller than me. But either my entering the room or flipping on the light was enough motion to activate it.

It does have a nail hole in the back so I'm considering hanging it tonight in a more discrete location. I don't mind having candles out because of the ambiance, but this thing isn't decorative, so I'd like to keep it hidden.

So what's this Bzz Agent and Bzz Kit I've mentioned.

Bzz Agent is a website that works with vendors to promote their products through word-of-mouth. I get the product to try and coupons to share with my friends, all for free. You can learn more and sign up yourself at BzzAgent.com. Tell them BzzAgent MegeeLee referred you.

I'm a little behind

I haven't been up with this blog much lately. I've been more than a little swamped. So I wanted to apologize. I'm hoping to replace my cell phone in the near future so I can text updates, but in the meantime... please bear with me.

How Skipping the Cart Could Save you $50 or More at the Grocery Store

Many people complain that they run into the store for that one thing and come out spending $50 or even $100. One way I avoid that is to skip the cart.

It's habit. You walk into the store and throw your purse into the cart. You can strap your kid in too - so in theory you can move faster. You're on a mission. Grab the milk and go. You start to barrel down the isle, and "Oh. That's a good deal." Into the cart it goes. And more goes. And more. This is compounded by your beautiful child who has to have puffy Cheetos and will scream until they have a big bag in their arms. Until you pass the Diego/Dora cereal. Got the milk, finally. Off to the register with a cart full of stuff.

This is why I skip the cart when I can. I can only buy what I can carry. It's pretty tough when my child is joining me on the excursion. It’s a lesson in patience and restraint, for both of us. We toddle down the isle. She’s a “big girl” now, so she wants to walk and also grab something to carry herself. Presently, the only tantrum-inducing product in the store is puffy Cheetos, so we avoid that isle. But she still needs to grab hold of something and carry it.

We make it to the milk. Since I only have one free hand, I grab the gallon and we start our trek to the register. My daughter usually has to surrender whatever prize she’s found when we get to the checkout lane because it was something random on an endcap that caught her eye.

Success. I’ve just left the store with milk, and only milk!

I realize that when my daughter is older and has picked something she truly wants, there will be different battle. But, I plan to keep up the no cart routine, because even when I surrender to her demands, I’ve still only given in to one more thing, and not a cartful. I can only cross my fingers that thing is puffy Cheetos!

Kmart Double Coupons 8/30-9/5

This is rumored to be the last time Kmart will be doubling coupons in 2009.

stlmommy.com has a great list of values and freebies. At last check, the S. County Kmart was sold out of all Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen and the 1/2oz visine. They didn't carry the scotch pop up tape, carpet fresh or scrubbing bubbles toilet cleaner. The coupon on the stlmommy site is for Pecan Honey Bunches of Oats and they only carry the regular.

Here are a couple I found that are not listed on her site:

Why I usually don't store hop, and why sometimes I do.

Many people will tell you that the trick to saving money is shopping around, checking sale ads and going to the store with the best price. That just doesn't work for me. I shop at WalMart. Yes, I know it's the devil of the mass merchandising giants, but their slogan is right on the money... Save Money. Live Better. And Sam Walton and I were born in the same town, so I figure I get a bye on the karma.

Why WalMart?
1. When I've price compared, 9 times out of 10, they're cheaper. When their not, it usually isn't much different so if I factor in the gas and time, its not really worth it.
2. They price match competitor ads. So if it's on sale elsewhere, I can get it at the same price at WalMart and not have to go all the way to another store.
3. This is likely unique to my situation, but I do my grocery shopping at night, late at night when other stores are closed. If you're self conscience about holding up a line because you want to price match a competitor ad or have a stack of coupons, go after the kids are in bed. Your hubby can hold down the fort. When you get home put away only perishable stuff and save the rest for morning. Other benefits... This is when they're restocking and trust me, these are folks who know where stuff is so no more wild goose chases. Also, the isles are fairly empty so I don't feel bad flipping through my coupons if I see a good deal.

When to store hop?
1. When WalMart doesn't carry what I want (duh). I am brand loyal to some products that WalMart just doesn't carry so I have to get them elsewhere. When this is the case, I watch for a sale and stock up so I don't have to make a special trip each week.
2. When I have a store coupon that makes the item cheaper than what I can get at WalMart. Target and Walgreen's both offer a lot of store coupons. Sometimes on specific products and sometimes in the form of register rewards - those little tickets that print at the register for $X off your next purchase. WalMart won't match or honor these coupons. Even better, you can combine the store coupon with manufacturer coupons for even more savings.
3. When I can double my coupons for a significant savings over WalMart. In St. Louis, Schnucks and Dierbergs double coupons up to $0.40. The extra trip doesn't make sense if I'm buying one thing, even if the coupon is doubled. So, I wait until I'm stocking up on several things with coupons under $0.40 and go then. Periodically, Kmart doubles coupons up to $2.00. This is the time to stock up on lots of stuff, especially toiletries. Often items are free after the Kmart double.

A note about formula checks

When you register at the formula manufacturers' websites I've listed in the Save on Baby section, you'll receive "checks" good toward formula purchases. Present these when you would present coupons at checkout. You'll save a lot of money on a very pricey baby item.

These are treated like a personal check, except you don't have to present ID. So (Bonus) you can use the checks AND manufacturers coupons for even more savings.

A note about redeeming your checks - If you buy 2 cans and have 2 checks for $5 off one can, you can use both checks, but you cannot use 2 checks for 1 can. At least that was my experience.

Below are answers to the most common questions I've been asked about Rebate Sites. These answers are based on my experience with Ebates. For more detailed information about membership click here then click the "Terms and Conditions" link.
What is a Rebate Site?
A rebate site is a website where your online purchases are tracked and you are credited cash back for purchases.
How much money can I make?
The amount of cash back you will earn is based upon how much online shopping you do, and the cash back rebate offered by a particular online retailer.
What Rebate Site should I use?
I've been using Ebates.com for several years and have been happy with it. Other sites are out there but I haven't tried them.
Should I join more than one Rebate Site?
Some people advocate joining all the rebate sites and checking the store's cash back offering on each site since it can vary from one site to another. I don't do this because I don't shop online often and Ebates requires a minimum of $5.00 cash back credit in your account before issuing a check. If I spread my purchases between rebate sites I probably wouldn't accumulate enough cash back for a check to be issued.
How often to I get a check?
Ebates pays cash back quarterly, when the minimum cash back requirements are met, ie: you have at least $5.00 cash back credited to your account on the check printing date.

I've tried this product and was very impressed with the 3-wick soy candle. An excellent value for the price. The fragrance was definitely as good as the Yankee Candles I normally burn, though it didn't burn as evenly. I had to scoop out a little wax to even it out.

I do not recommend the reed diffuser. I used mine in a bedroom and never smelled it.

Introduction

After the encouragement of others, I'm dipping my feet into a monetized site for sharing information I've found on great deals, freebies, coupons and other ways I've found to either make money (nickles and dimes), save money or get stuff for free.

Presently, I'm pulling my information from a variety of sources. So, when I've gotten my information from someone else, I'll be linking to their site so they can get credit for their page views. As I get better at this myself, I'll be able to include the information directly on my site so you won't need to "jump through hoops" to get these great deals.

Please note, the ads on this page are how I make money doing this, but as of right now are not products I necessarily use or endorse. These ads are generated using Google's adsense.
